Constitutional law course

Intensive Classes

This course sets the foundations for all of the other NCA subjects and we strongly advise all NCA candidates to take Constitutional law as their first exam. Having a good understanding of the constitution will provide you with a solid foundation which will allow you to excel in the other subjects. Constitutional Law is an area that many students find challenging, and recently there has been a growing number of students who fail this particular subject. In this class, we will spend time on each of the four topics set out in the syllabus. In addition to teaching the substantive material in the course, the instructor will set out a detailed step-by-step guide on how to perform the various types of constitutional judicial review. This is a very heavy course, but also a favourite to teach.

  • Instructor is going to highlight the places where Peter Hogg’s opinions are at odds with the Supreme Court. The syllabus states that “candidates should also be alert to instances where the views expressed in the Hogg textbook are at odds with judicial opinions or are incomplete because the textbook has not yet been updated to reflect the latest judicial rulings listed on the syllabus.”

Exam Workshop

We concentrate solely on solving exam questions in the exam workshop. In order to attend this workshop, students must have completed their studies or taken our intensive classes. Many students find comfort with the Constitutional law materials but have difficulty applying them. The focus of this workshop is working on the application and how the NCA expects your answers to be drafted. We will be working on the NCA sample exam posted on the NCA website as of August, 2022. We will also provide additional questions that will be reviewed during the workshop. Students will have the opportunity to be involved in a group moot exercise in the workshop.

This class includes:

  • 3 hour live session

  • Past NCA sample exam papers – Going through past exam questions and assisting you as to how to answer them

  • Opportunity to submit a written answer to an assigned question and have your instructor grade it and offer you feedback

  • Students may have the opportunity to work in small groups on an assigned task under the instructor’s guidance
