Peter W. Hogg
Canada’s legal and academic community loses renowned constitutional authority, lawyer and legal scholar . Professor Hogg passed away at the age of 80 on February 4, 2020.
Hogg earned his LLB from the University of New Zealand. He went on to attain a Master of Laws from the University of Harvard Law School and a PhD from Monash University in Melbourne. In 1970, Hogg was appointed professor of law at Osgoode Hall Law School. He was later appointed dean of the law school from 1998 - 2003. From 2003, Professor Hogg was a scholar in residence at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP. Hogg was admitted to the New Zealand Bar in 1962, the Victoria Bar (Australia) in 1968, and the Ontario Bar in 1973.
Professor Hogg was renowned in the Canadian legal community for his contribution to Canadian constitutional law. According to Black and Ricther, his treaties Constitutional Law of Canada was cited by the Supreme Court of Canada more than twice as much as any other author (Citation of Academic Authority by the Supreme Court of Canada, 1985-1990” (1993) 16 Dalhousie L.J. 377, 389).
